Sophie Doutreligne
In her artistic practice, Sophie Doutreligne plays with the boundaries of the socially accepted.Fascinated by provocation and the narrative potential of the sexualized body, Doutreligne presents the spectator pornographic, taboo-like, alienating, yet very recognizable situations. The ambiguity coming from the rich source of amateur porn thrills her: an apparent ʻuniversalʼ pornographic scene is staged within the privacy of the house. All that remains is a very private vulnerability – bodily imperfections, worn out sofaʼs, dirty jugs and leftovers – and the failed desire to answer to the expectations of the viewer. The fake gloss of constructed desire is replaced by a sensitive truth until the image gets so intimate that you feel ashamed of looking (away). Provocation is not the only way though. This is visible in the many sensitive sketches and drawings of loved ones, landscapes and situations. In terms of shape and design, Doutreligne explores the opportunities but also the limits of a broad range of media and materials. Every medium is carefully connected to the expression of a specific idea.
